3) Low E coatings, gas fills and spacers
Low-E coatings, the noble gases, and spacer bars are the trump cards of IGUs.
➜ The “type of Low E-coating” determines your window’s U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). A high-SHGC Low-E coating (sometimes called high solar gain) is best for cold climates or passive solar. A low-SHGC coating (sometimes called low solar gain) is perfect for hot climates. 6) Condensation, noise and comfort
Your comfort mostly comes down to a few key numbers.
First, target a low U-factor (high insulation) specially on cold-side facades.
Second, pick SHGC by facade: allow more solar gain on sunny walls, less on shaded ones. Many manufacturers provide full NFRC ratings (U-value, SHGC, VLT).
Third, look at Condensation Resistance ratings. An “NFRC Condensation Resistance (CR) rating above 50 is generally recommended”. So, high CR means the glass and frame stay warmer… thus you avoid fogging on cold days.
Lastly, noise also matters in a capsule’s small space. So, for dampen sound, consider laminated acoustic glass or special acoustic interlayers. Because laminated glass has a PVB/acoustic interlayer that “decouples panes and absorbs vibration”.
