Can a Capsule House Be Off Grid?

An off grid house means living without utility connections. And a well planned capsule house can easily run off-grid for electricity, water and sanitation… but you have to size your systems for the worst month, pick efficient appliances and have to add reliable backups. This single-sentence answer tells you the short truth so you can decide fast.

 

A capsule house can run off grid when systems are sized for the worst month and loads are efficient. Plan solar with batteries, an inverter, water source and treatment, septic or composting toilet, and a reliable backup generator. Local codes must be met.

1) Decide if off-grid fits your capsule house

 First, you have to decide “how you’ll use your capsule house”. Like “will you live in this full time or as a weekend resort?” Because full time living needs far more heat and electricity. For this, you have to list all your electrical loads (lights, fridge, devices, heater) and then estimate daily usage. 

Tiny homes mostly use only 3-7 kWh per day just for basics. But if you plan for cooking, heating or air conditioning then your use will be higher. Now, compare this to how many panels you can fit on or near your capsule house. Note: a small roof may only hold a couple of panels. If so, then plan to add ground-mounted or pole-mounted panels.

Good insulation is also very critical in a capsule house; as insulating the walls, roof or floor cuts your heating needs.

4) Water supply and wastewater without hookups

You usually have three main sources for water. Like delivered water or a well or harvested rainwater. You can have water trucked in and stored in a tank. Or have a well with a DC or AC pump. 

For rainwater, use gutters and a tank. In all cases, treat your water. A proven method is to filter to 5 microns and then disinfect with UV light. This meets EPA drinking water standards. Plus, change filters and UV bulbs as recommended. Also, consider a ‘first-flush’ diverter on the roof to discard initial debris. And use an accumulator tank or pressure switch so your pump runs only when needed. Also, if you have a well then protect it from freezing plus test water quality regularly.

For wastewater, your options depend on code. A septic system works well if allowed. Otherwise you can use a certified composting toilet and a greywater plan. Good to label as non-drinkable water sources (toilet/shower only). And follow best practices:

  • keep tanks clean 
  • empty solids properly
  • prevent any untreated wastewater from leaking
  • Always meet health codes on water treatment and waste disposal

5) Solve the roof-space problem for solar

If your roof can’t hold enough panels or gets shade, then use ground mounts or another structure. As ground-mounted arrays can be tilted perfectly toward the sun and cleared of snow easily. But they cost more (posts, wiring trench, etc.)…. but produce well if space is available. 

 

You can also use a solar carport or pergola. And keep them reasonably close to avoid long cable runs. Also ensure ground arrays are on a level, unshaded site. 

 

Moreover, in snowy areas, tilt panels steeply (45-60°) so snow slides off. Plus leave space on the ground and roof. Also, protect equipment: like putting combiner boxes, switches or batteries in weatherproof enclosures and using outdoor rated wiring. 

6) Cut loads with the right appliances

Cutting your electrical load is vital. For this, you have to install ultra efficient appliances. Like you can use LED lights or a small ENERGY STAR refrigerator or a solar ready fridge. And for cooking or backup heating, a propane or gas stove can save electricity. 

Moreover, consider wiring lighting on 12V DC to avoid inverter losses. Some cabins use DC refrigerators or lamps for extra savings. And also use an efficient hot water system: a heat pump heater gives 2–3× the heat per kWh. That greatly reduces energy use. But if you can’t install one then use an on-demand gas heater, so you only heat water on demand.

Furthermore, ventilate very carefully. You have to use low draw fans or an HRV instead of leaving a big exhaust fan on. And turn off fans or lights when done. Also, do heavy tasks during the day when solar is at its highest (for example, run the washer or charge batteries after breakfast). 

Lastly, you have to install an energy monitor. Seeing your power use in real time helps you spot waste. As you’ll immediately know if someone left a light or heater on. 

7) Budget, permits, and backup readiness

You have to make a plan for your budget plus safety measures. As solar panels, batteries, inverter/charger and plumbing, all cost money. Even a small off-grid kit can be a thousand dollars. Also add wiring, mounting gear and professional installation. Then get quotes for an electrician and plumber. And set aside fees for local permits or inspections too. 

 

Make sure your capsule has room (or a nearby shed) for equipment and batteries. As batteries mostly go in a small enclosure; lead acid must be vented. And also budget for latter battery replacement.

 

Now, review regulations again. As permits may be needed for rainwater tanks, septic or fuel storage. And also check rules on composting toilets or propane tanks. As it’s easier to plan this early than fix it later.

 

Lastly, add backups. Get a small generator (propane or diesel) and fuel. This can carry you through long storms or maintenance. Also install smoke and CO alarms… if you use combustion indoors. Moreover, if possible, then use a remote monitor or alarm on your power system (some inverters can text you if batteries get low).
