In fact, you can move a capsule house from one site to another… but only if it’s designed as a relocatable model. However, before you plan a move, you need to understand what makes relocation possible, how many times you can do it and what really happens each time you move.

Does a capsule house support repeat moves

First, you need to confirm whether your capsule house is designed to move. For that, check the factory drawings or manual for a note on relocation capability. For example: some drawings mark models as “secondary relocation” if they are made for it. If not, you can damage the model each time you lift it. 

 

A relocatable design will include labeled lifting lugs or eyes at the corners and structural bracing for hoisting. However, you should see the maximum load and safe angles for slings in the paperwork. Also make sure you move the house as a whole module whenever possible. 

 

Moreover, single-section capsule houses are much easier to transport than multi-section models. Because you can put them on the truck or ship fully assembled. For cross-border or overseas moves, you will rely on sea freight. Mostly the capsule is loaded onto a flat-rack container or as breakbulk on a vessel. (Flat racks are open-top frames that hold the unit securely.) You have to follow special ocean shipping rules for heavy or odd-size cargo. When the ship reaches the destination port then the module comes off by crane. And then goes on a truck or barge to the final site. 

 

In short words: crane + truck for short-haul land moves and flat-rack or breakbulk + truck for ocean crossings. These methods allow you to take a capsule house anywhere in the world, as long as the dimensions and weight comply with transport limits.

Practices to avoid

Here are some practices you should avoid during relocation:

You should not cut or split the capsule shell just to fit it through a doorway or gate. For example: do not cut away half the roof or wall. This will ruin the module and its finishes. So, avoid any action that permanently damages the exterior panels or structure. 

Never attempt a move with the utilities still active. Always drain water and sewerage systems plus de-energize electrical circuits earlier. Because moving with power or plumbing live can be very dangerous and will likely burst pipes or wiring. 

Make sure to brace doors and windows so they don’t swing or shatter and secure any loose interior elements. That way you prevent damage and speed up reassembly at the new site.

Wear and tear to expect each move

Plus strap down all furniture, shelves and loose items. Also, disconnect utilities: shut off and cap off gas, water and electrical feeds. Double-check that tanks (water heaters, propane tanks) are empty or secured. 

 

Finally, photo-document the house from every side and corner and record how it sits on its foundation. This gives you a record in case something shifts.

Transport and securement essentials

Most important, use the carrier’s guide or a recognized Cargo Securing Code to determine the number and strength of lashings. Your goal is to prevent any sliding or tipping under ship motion. Moreover, always fasten each strap to rated anchor points on the capsule frame and the rack and tighten them gradually. If a container or ship’s manual is available, follow it exactly for flat-rack loads. 

When not to move again

You must also know when it’s time to stop moving the capsule and consider other options. 

 

➜ If you find structural cracks or permanent deformation after a move, that’s a warning. Like cracks in a frame member or on lifting lugs, or if corners have bent out of shape, that means the house is weakened. Also, extensive rust through the walls or floor structure is also a no-go.
